Gran‘Gol
Ruled by tradition, and seemingly unbothered by Rivuzan‘s slow doom.
An archipelago comprised of larger islands located far north. A place of extremes, Gran’Gol is comprised of tall, volcanic mountains jutting out of polar deserts. There are two options for living here: inside of the settlements built inside of hollowed out mountains, or flying up to live within the homes carved into the side of steep cliff sides. Safe entry can only be had by robust sea vessels that can handle treacherous waters, or by airships that are largely Argdravarian-controlled. On the latter point, Gran’Gol does have a small fleet of their own.
Gran’Gol has always been steadfast in its belief that The Rift could only endanger them by simply consuming the entirety of Rivuzan. Their settlements don’t go deep underground, and they are as far from the equator as could be. However, the weight of their longtime ally Argdravar gradually becomes greater and greater as The Rift continues to expand. While Gran’Gol continues to interact with the Crystal Union on Argdravar’s behalf, they have also pushed for Argdravar to compensate them for the added burden of producing more resources for them. Not in a position to argue against anyone, Argdravar complied by providing them some of their technology.
The hollowed out mountains of Gran’Gol house large forges, capitalising on the flow of lava to conduct their work and keep their living spaces hospitable. Large, metal bridges connect one mountain to another, and provide access to cliff side settlements. Working hard to keep their communities thriving is instilled in everyone at a young age, as it is far too easy for their homeland to become impossible to sustain if too many were to become complacent. Gran’Gol is certainly not a place that one casually travels to, and it is assumed any visitors are there for a clearly defined purpose. Those who choose to come to Gran’Gol are typically the types to seek out powerful, well-made equipment that could only be had in a place such as this. While their wares do trickle out into other regions, sometimes the best option is to simply seek out the source.
There are no established communities of Rifters in Gran’Gol, not even of the cold climate dwelling Froziltans. Any seen here are almost certainly travellers from elsewhere, most typically from Argdravar. There is no animosity towards Rifters here, they are simply treated the same way as any other outsider.
Tradition is the true king of Gran’Gol. Not much is questioned, because why waste time to fix something not seen as broken? The extreme environment the nation resides in also expresses itself through its society’s day-to-day: to do what we’ve always done, are undoubtedly the best at, and what allows us to continue to live to do what we’ve always done. The intensity of this mindset tends to baffle people from, say, Kulleroth or the Crystal Union, who otherwise would appreciate the dedication to one’s craft. The people of Gran’Gol are not cruel and harsh, they are serious and pragmatic. If one of their own is in trouble, you can be certain that they will help that one individual in the name of the group at large staying strong.
